Putting Conan to bed, for now and with class.
Jan 23rd, 2010 by SQ

During Conan’s final words as Tonight Show host, there were tears and there was plenty of class in everything said.

And this request of his fans: “Please do not be cynical.  I hate cynicism, for the record it’s my least favorite quality, it doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

Here’s Mediaite’s coverage, including video of his statement.

Remembering Triumph The Insult Comic Dog: a video montage.
Jan 22nd, 2010 by SQ

I’m sadder that we might never see Robert Smigel’s fantastic Triumph The Insult Comic Dog than any other part of the Conan/NBC breakup.  Once realizing I might have nothing left to do but reminisce, I went looking for all the Triumph classics.

Fortunately, MSNBC put them all together right here.

‘Leno remains disingenuous to an intolerable extreme. He's always playing the injured puppy — the good-hearted lug in the blue-collar shirt who gets trampled over by the big guys.’

Jay Leno lends his account of events to a place far away from the TV camera.

We’re with our colleague Appanage over at Exquisite ContrarianJay Leno’s gentlemanly explanation of events doesn’t wash.

We also got a chance to see the show last night and found ourselves noticing the contrived nature of Jay’s eyeballs lined up twenty feet off camera while rending a heart warming account that seemed something less than warming of the heart.  MSNBC offers more here, but somehow they missed what we saw.

Here’s a great, easy to follow legal explanation behind why NBC actually did breach Conan’s contract.

I hope this thing ends soon.

Conan unleashes.

‘“Hosting the Tonight Show has been the fulfilment of a lifelong dream for me. And I just want to say to the kids out there watching: ‘You can do anything you want.’ Yeah. Unless Jay Leno wants to do it, too.”’

At this rate you’ve got to wonder if he’ll finish even out the week.
