Amazon Kindle and Barnes & Noble Nook moving to reader equivalent of junk bond status.
Jun 21st, 2010 by SQ

Is iPad an e-book category killer or are the commodity players just killing each other in a fight to be the cheapest number two player?

  • Amazon has cut the price of the Kindle by $70 to $189 in response to Barnes & Noble’s Nook price cut and, probably, Apple’s iBooks threat

I think I’m over Tiger Woods.
Jun 21st, 2010 by SQ

While I  was knocking out some writing on the trusty laptop I turned on the Pebble Beach US Open marathon for some background noise and found myself drawn in for two reasons: it was anyone’s tournament to win, and Tiger was enough in the hunt that I knew we’d get a live soundbite or two from him once his round was complete.

Then I started to break down my preoccupation with that one and realized why I really cared, and came to the conclusion that I was so unsatisfied with how he dealt with the press after The Masters that I’d been hoping beyond realistic hope that he’d markedly step up his camera face and show a little understanding for the game going on outside his head.

Unsurprisingly, I was once again disappointed.

While guys like Phil Mickelson were obviously still preoccupied with how the round unsuccessfully played out for them, they all had very complimentary things to say in their reflection.  For Phil it was appreciation for a great walk on a great course, and acknowledgment of appreciation for the USGA choosing such a spectacular venue.  For others including Tom Watson it was an appreciation for the crowds and, again, the opportunity to spend the weekend at such a remarkable place.

Tiger?  Well, once again we heard how his round sucked and that’s about it.

It seems time for Woods to strongly consider focusing on the positive, even when the negative is inevitably going to be part of the conversation.  It’s hard to strike compassion for a faltering champion who completely fails to acknowledge even the slightest appreciation and honor for the opportunity to be in the position he’s in, regardless the outcome.

In times like these, humility is an important trait.

Posnanski: one ref’s inexplicable call will leave potential new soccer followers perplexed with the game.
Jun 18th, 2010 by SQ

I think Joe was politely implying the horrible ref job on the US’s last goal – the one was waved off without explanation – might have cost soccer a new generation of American fans.

And all sports are nothing without fans.

From the archives: AppleInsider says Apple’s Mac mini is dead.
Jun 18th, 2010 by SQ

Now that we’ve been treated to an incredible new Mac mini release, I can’t get this old AppleInsider post out of my head.

Here’s the final sentence: “Ladies and gentlemen, AppleInsider believes in all sincerity that the Mac mini is dead.”

I completely lost trust for AppleInsider as an Apple news and information source when I read this.  ”Believes in all sincerity”?  Interesting language when you’re holding yourself up as a vital source of information.

Perhaps I wouldn’t have lost trust – now I just laugh about it, in case you’re wondering if it had some big long term impact – had they not reported around the same time that the hard drive based iPod would be forever discontinued (last I checked, it’s still around).

The lesson: don’t write crap that lacks truth and/or substance.  That’s called propaganda.

iPhone 4 has an awesome camera.
Jun 18th, 2010 by SQ

If you’re one of those people that thinks more megapixels mean better photos, that’s not accurate at all.  More megapixels mean more data, but more data doesn’t mean good data.

It’s like wanting a local phonebook and instead getting one with some numbers from your neighborhood and some others from a neighborhood in Zimbabwe – and none of them are correctly matched to their owners.

If you missed it we’ve seen this movie before (or should I have said ‘photo’?). DSLR manufacturers have finally stopped the megapixel war in favor of getting quality from the megapixels their sensors process, and even the current iPhone came out well ahead of the higher megapixel Droid in recent shootouts.

The entire Apple blogosphere is going to report this translated article from the Czech Republic as significant because some guy’s got his hands on an iPhone 4 before its release, but they’re missing the real news here.  This is arguably the first time we’ve seen photos taken by the iPhone 4 that were not Apple-sourced.

What do they reveal?  Apple iPhone 4 is the first ever phone based point-and-shoot camera for the rest of us, and that means the end of the non-DSLR camera segment as we know it.

Apple iPhone users of Microsoft Hotmail get a nice gift.

ActiveSync for Hotmail is starting to be enabled!  And once iOS4 comes out you’ll be able to have several ActiveSync accounts on your Apple mobile device at once. Awesome.

Forrest Gump found in Dallas, adds “first iPhone 4 camper” to his many accolades.
Jun 18th, 2010 by SQ

We were blown away to find that Forrest Gump is alive and well.  After having moved to Dallas (apparently either due to Katrina of the oil spill) he’s once again chasing down new and remarkable feats.  Yesterday, one whole week before iPhone 4′s release, he hunkered down in his pursuit of become the first iPhone camper worldwide, setting the record for earliest electronics device campout once owned by a highly animated coffee cup which stood in line for 3 days outside the very first Apple Store built – located at Tyson’s Corner, Virginia – only three years ago.

Congratulations, Forrest.  You’ve come a long way from the world ping pong championships.  We’re hoping you have an empty coffee cup of your own handy, by the way.
